The correct collar size should always be based on your dog’s neck measurements, not on another collar. Even if the old collar appears to fit perfectly, its construction, leather thickness and buckle position may be completely different from the new one. Choosing the right size is not only about comfort. It is essential for your dog’s health.

How to Choose Correct Dog Collar Size?

The most reliable way to choose the correct collar is to measure your dog’s neck using a soft measuring tape. Many owners measure the collar their dog already wears. The problem is that two collars with exactly the same overall length can have completely different internal circumferences once fastened. Why?

Because the inside circumference depends on material thickness. A thicker leather collar naturally creates a smaller inner circumference than a thinner one, even if both collars have exactly the same overall length. This is why copying the measurements from an old collar often leads to disappointment.

The Best Fit Is Usually the Middle Hole

A well-fitting collar should normally fasten somewhere around the middle adjustment hole. This leaves enough room to tighten or loosen the collar if necessary. This becomes especially important for dogs whose neck circumference changes throughout the year.

Many breeds grow a thick winter coat that adds several centimeters around the neck. During summer they lose much of this volume. If the collar only fits on the very first or the very last hole, you have very little flexibility for seasonal changes. Choosing the correct size allows the collar to remain comfortable all year round

Collar Width Is Just as Important as Collar Length

When choosing a collar, many owners focus entirely on neck circumference. The width is equally important.

A collar should never become a corset for the dog’s neck. If it is excessively wide, the dog cannot bend or rotate its neck naturally. Instead of distributing pressure comfortably, the collar begins pressing against the lower jaw, the base of the skull or the shoulders.

Over time this may cause:

• muscle tension;
• restricted movement;
• pressure points;
• rubbing of the coat;
• chronic neck problems.

The goal is not simply to make the collar wide. The goal is to make it comfortable. And this is not the same thing.

A Strong Neck Does Not Automatically Mean It Needs Wide Collar

One of the most common misconceptions is that dogs with muscular bodies should automatically wear extremely wide collars. This is particularly common with breeds such as:

• Pit Bulls;
• American Staffordshire Terriers;
• Bull Terriers;
• American Bullies.

Extra-wide collars often look impressive. However, looking impressive and being comfortable are not the same thing. The correct width depends primarily on the length of the dog’s neck, not on how thick or muscular it appears. A dog should be able to lower its head, turn comfortably and move freely without the collar pressing into the jaw or the shoulders.

If the collar touches the skull when the dog bends its neck, it is probably too wide. A correctly chosen collar should support natural movement. Restriction = tension = pain.

A Poorly Fitting Collar Can Affect More Than Comfort

An incorrectly sized collar is not simply inconvenient. If it is too tight, it can put constant pressure on the neck, restrict movement and make breathing uncomfortable during exercise.

If it is too loose, the dog may slip out of it.

A collar that sits in the wrong position also tends to rub against the coat every time the dog moves. Over time this can lead to broken hair, bald patches and irritation, particularly in long-haired breeds. Proper fit is one of the most important factors in preventing these problems.

Leather Quality Also Helps Protect the Coat

Not all leather collars are equally gentle on your dog’s coat. Many cheap leather collars have rough, unfinished or sharply cut edges. As the collar moves during everyday walks, these edges gradually rub against the hair, causing excessive wear and sometimes damaging the coat.
