Pony Bareback Pad: A Practical Alternative to a Traditional Pony Saddle

Finding a saddle that fits a pony well is often much more difficult than people expect. Many native breeds and round-bodied ponies have wide backs, little or no visible wither and proportions that simply do not match standard saddle trees. As a result, even an expensive saddle may bridge, rock or create pressure points if it is not built specifically for that pony.

For many owners, a pony bareback pad offers a practical and comfortable alternative. It provides close contact with the pony, is lightweight and easy to handle, and can be an excellent choice for everyday riding, hacking or building a young rider’s confidence. When properly designed, it combines rider comfort with good weight distribution while avoiding many of the fitting problems associated with traditional saddles.

Why a Bareback Pad Can Be the Right Choice for a Pony

A soft pony saddle or treeless saddle adapts naturally to the pony’s shape instead of forcing the pony to fit a rigid tree. This can be particularly useful for very round ponies, native breeds and other equines, like mules and donkeys, whose back shape is not what traditional horse saddle tree are made for.

At Lazypony saddlery workshop, our bareback pads can also be made with optional spinal clearance panels. These panels help create space along the pony’s vertebra, reducing direct pressure on the dorsal processes. For many ponies, this is something they will never get from traditional saddles.

Bareback Pads with Stirrups: Useful, But With Important Limitations

A bareback pad with stirrups or treeless saddle with stirrups can be an excellent option for very young riders. Small children often benefit from the additional stability that stirrups provide when they are learning to ride in balance and other basic riding skills.

However, stirrups should always be used with an understanding of how forces are transferred to the pony’s back. Unlike a saddle with a tree, a bareback pad cannot spread concentrated loads through a rigid tree. When a rider stands in the stirrups, rides in a two-point position, do posting trot or jumping, much of the force is concentrated into relatively small areas beneath the stirrup attachments.

For this reason, we do not recommend using stirrups on a bareback pad for heavier riders or for activities involving significant weight in the stirrups, such as jumping, rising trot or half-seat. Used appropriately, however, they can be a very useful feature for lightweight children for flat riding.

Designed to Stay Stable

One concern many riders have about riding pads is stability. A poorly designed pad can rotate, slide sideways or move when mounting.

Our pony treeless saddle has been carefully balanced to remain stable during normal riding. The construction provides excellent grip for the rider and helping the pad stay securely positioned on the pony’s back. In many situations, riders can even mount directly from the ground without the pad shifting excessively.

Of course, every pony is different. If your pony has an extremely round back with no wither, or if the rider is still developing an independent seat and balance, adding a breastplate can provide additional stability and confidence.

Built for Years of Daily Riding

The material plays a much bigger role than many riders realise. Many cheap bareback pads and treeless saddles look attractive when new, but are made from low-quality artificial suede or synthetic fleece that quickly begins to wear. Sheepskin on the other hand is expensive but often becomes matted with sweat and dirt. Cheap fabrics can lose their appearance and durability after relatively little use.

Lazypony bareback pads are made using Aquaclean®, a premium upholstery fabric chosen specifically for its durability and ease of maintenance. The fabric is water-repellent, breathable and exceptionally resistant to abrasion, exceeding 200,000 Martindale cycles. It also incorporates a protective layer that helps prevent snags and makes it highly resistant to everyday wear.

One particularly useful feature for horse owners is that horse hair does not become deeply embedded in the fibres. Thanks to the structure of the fabric, loose hair can be removed quickly and easily, making routine cleaning much simpler than with fleece, suede-like materials or sheepskin.

Unlike natural sheepskin, Aquaclean® does not felt or compress from repeated exposure to sweat, and it is much easier to keep clean after long rides. It is also free from PFCs, pleasant to the touch and designed to maintain its appearance even after years of regular use.

While cheaper riding pads may initially seem like a way to save money, they often need replacing after relatively little use because their materials deteriorate quickly. Investing in high-quality materials means your bareback pad continues to perform and look good for many years, even with frequent riding.
