How to Clean and Care for a Crystal Browband
We all love sparkly crystal browbands on our horses. They look stunning both at home and at competitions! And the number of colors and styles available on the market is overwhelming! So you’ve found the style and color you like, but how do you care for it so it lasts for years and looks great? A crystal browband picks up dust and sweat during everyday riding. A few minutes of gentle cleaning will help keep the crystals bright and the leather in good condition.
Cleaning the crystals
Before you start, check that the small metal claws holding each crystal are firmly in place. If one has lifted, avoid brushing that crystal until it has been secured. If the claw is just a little bit bent back. You can try using a soft object, like a pencil eraser, to gently and smoothly bend it. Don’t press too hard, or you may break the claw or the crystal. Avoid using hard or metal objects, as this can also break the claw and scratch or break the crystal. If a claw is broken and the stone falls out because of it, you can have the piece repaired at a jewelry workshop, where they can carefully solder a new claw. Have the setting repaired before your horse wears the browband again.
Add a couple of drops of mild dishwashing liquid to a bowl of warm water. Dip a soft toothbrush into the mixture, then remove the excess water. The brush should be damp rather than dripping wet, otherwise you may damage the leather. Lay the browband on a flat surface and gently brush the crystals with short up-and-down movements. Take your time around the settings. Once you have finished, check the claws again and pat the crystals dry with a soft, smooth cloth.
Leather Care is Important Too
Proper leather care is important too. Keep the leather as dry as possible while cleaning the crystals. Wipe any moisture away and let the browband dry naturally before putting it back on the bridle. Do not soak it or leave it near a heater to dry.
After riding, check for loose crystals, worn stitching and marks where the browband may be rubbing your horse. Try to prevent your horse from rubbing its head while wearing the bridle, as this can catch the crystals or damage their settings. Store the browband where it will not be pressed against other tack.
