How leather horse tack is made

Most horse owners use their bridles, cavessons, halters, and reins every day without thinking much about how they are made. Yet there is a huge difference between mass-produced tack and handcrafted leather horse equipment. The quality of the materials, the construction methods, and the attention to detail all influence how comfortable, durable, and beautiful the final product will be.

It starts with the leather

The foundation of quality horse tack is quality leather. At Lazypony saddlery workshop, we use vegetable-tanned leather, often called veg-tan leather. T

Why is most quality horse tack made from vegetable-tanned leather?

There are two main types of leather used today for the horse tack:

  • Vegetable-tanned leather (veg-tan)
  • Chrome-tanned leather

Vegetable tanning uses natural tannins extracted from plants, bark and wood. The process is slow, often taking weeks, but it produces leather that is strong, durable and able to hold its shape.

Chrome tanning uses chromium salts. It is much faster and less expensive, producing softer and more flexible leather, but not so strong and long-lasting.

But when it comes to horse tack, strength and durability matter. Veg-tan leather is highly valued in traditional saddlery because it unique qualities. Instead of wearing out, it becomes more supple, richer in color, and more unique with use.

Every piece of tack begins as a flat piece of leather. Individual straps are carefully cut, shaped, and prepared for their specific purpose.

The edges are beveled and burnished to create a smooth finish that is comfortable for both horse and rider. Holes are punched, leather dyed and oiled, hardware is fitted, and every component is assembled with attention to detail. It takes time. Every item needs at least 4 days to be made.

Unlike factory-made tack, where speed is the priority, handcrafted saddlery focuses on precision. Each piece is checked repeatedly throughout the process to ensure correct proportions and high-quality workmanship.

The importance of handcraftsmanship

Handmade horse tack allows for a higher level of quality control. A skilled saddler can select the best sections of leather, adjust details during production, and ensure that every stitch and every detail is positioned correctly. This level of care is impossible to achieve in large-scale manufacturing.

The result is tack that looks better, last longer, much stronger and truly unique.

Why customization matters

One of the greatest advantages of handcrafted horse tack is the ability to customize it. No two horses are exactly alike. Different breeds, head shapes, and proportions often make standard sizes difficult to fit perfectly.

Custom-made tack allows adjustments to measurements, proportions, and design details. A longer browband, a shorter noseband, wider padding, or specific strap lengths can all make a significant difference to comfort and fit.

Customization is about design too. Riders can also choose leather colors, stitching colors, padding, decorations and hardware finishes to create equipment that reflects their personal style.
