Anatomical Pony Bridles: Fit, Comfort and Quality
Finding a good bridle for a pony can be surprisingly difficult. Tack shops usually offer plenty of options for full-sized horses, while the choice for ponies is often limited to cheap synthetic bridles or brightly coloured children’s equipment. But a pony needs a well-fitting, comfortable bridle just as much as a larger horse does.
Whether you have a Shetland pony, Welsh pony, Connemara or another small breed, the basic principles remain the same. The bridle should fit the individual shape of the pony’s head, allow comfortable movement, and keep staying in a correct positions. A properly fitted anatomical pony bridle can help avoid painful pressure and rubbing and allow the pony to concentrate on the rider not on uncomfortable equipment.
Pony Bridle Size Is More Than Just “Small”
Choosing a pony bridle size is not always as straightforward as selecting Pony or Shetland from a size chart. Ponies can have very different head proportions even when they are similar in height. One may have a particularly broad forehead and short face, while another has a narrow head but needs a longer cheekstraps.
This is particularly noticeable with very small breeds. Finding a properly proportioned Shetland pony bridle, for example, can be difficult because simply making every component of a horse bridle shorter does not necessarily produce the right fit.
At Lazypony saddlery workshop, any of our bridle models can be made in a pony size, regardless of the pony’s breed. If standard sizes do not work, we can also make a bridle according to your pony’s individual measurements without an additional charge for custom sizing. It means that we can make perfect fit, top-quality leather bridle for every pony.
A Pony Can Have the Same Quality Tack as a Horse
Pony tack does not have to mean inexpensive synthetic materials. Many owners want exactly the same things for their ponies that they would choose for a larger horse: high-quality leather, strong hardware and an anatomical design intended for regular riding.
A well-made leather small pony bridle can last for many years when properly cared for. Full-grain leather also becomes softer and more supple with use but retaining the strength needed for everyday use. For an anatomical design and quality hardware, threads and padding allows you to use that pony bridle for many years.
Colour does not have to be complicated either. A traditional pony bridle in brown works beautifully for everyday riding and suits every pony, but a black pony bridle is equally versatile and more common for modern riding. At Lazypony saddlery workshop, however, these are only the beginning: many different colours of leather, padding and stitching and hardware colours and styles can be combined in many different ways.
English, Baroque, Portuguese and Bitless Bridles for Ponies
Choosing pony-sized tack also does not mean being restricted to one basic design. If you want a traditional English pony bridle, you can choose a classic model with the same construction and finishing that we use for our full-sized horse bridles.
But the same applies to more unusual tack. A pony can have a baroque bridle, a medieval-inspired bridle or a Portuguese model made specifically for his hear. Riders who prefer to work without a bit can choose a bitless pony bridle, sidepull or hackamore. For groundwork, lunging or classical training you can choose one of our pony cavesson.
The important point is that the design should be scaled and fitted to the pony. Decorative elements, anatomical shaping and the position of buckles and straps all work best when they sit where they were intended to be.
At our workshop, you don’t need to look for a separate pony collection or limit yourself to models specifically labelled as pony tack. Simply choose any Lazypony bridle you like, and we can make it in the size your pony needs. Whether it is a classic English bridle, baroque or medieval design, a Portuguese bridle, a bitless bridle or a cavesson, the same model can be made for a pony – including to your individual measurements at no extra cost.
A Bridle Made for Your Pony
Ponies are not simply smaller horses when it comes to tack fitting. Their head shapes and proportions vary considerably, and a bridle that is only “almost right” can place straps, buckles or padding where they should not be and cause health problems to a pony.
A correctly fitted anatomical pony bridle provides the same advantages we expect from good-quality tack for any horse: comfort, appropriate pressure distribution, freedom of movement and comfort during training. Whether your pony needs a standard Pony size, a tiny Shetland bridle or completely custom measurements, there is no reason to compromise on fit or quality. Lazypony Saddlery Workshop
