Large Dog Collars. How to choose the best collar for large breeds?
Finding a good large dog collar can be more difficult. For breeds such as Mastiffs, Cane Corsos, Rottweilers, Great Danes and other large and powerful dogs equipment must be extra strong. The collar itself, the leather, stitching, buckle and D-ring all need to cope with much more force than collar for medium-size dog.
This is where many mass-produced collars show their limitations. Cheap hardware is often one of the weakest parts of such collars: low-quality metal can corrode, deform or eventually break under repeated heavy loads. For a small, calm dog this may be not so critical, but for a large and active dog, quality of materials becomes much more important.
What Makes a Good Large Leather Dog Collar?
At Lazypony workshop, we approach dog collars from a saddlery perspective. Our large leather dog collars are handmade from high-quality full-grain leather, using the same type of leather we use for horse tack. It is strong, durable and designed for equipment that has to cope with load much more intensive then any dog can apply.
After all, leather suitable for controlling and handling a playful horse is more than capable of becoming the foundation of really god collar for a large breeds. Hardware deserves just as much attention. Lazypony collars use solid brass or stainless-steel hardware, selected for strength, corrosion resistance and long service life. These are materials intended for years of regular use not the hardware chosen simply to keep manufacturing costs as low as possible. Because quality of the collar can safe your dog life one day.
When Even an XXL Dog Collar Isn’t Big Enough
Sizing creates another problem for owners of really large dogs. An XXL dog collar sounds big, but XXL is not a universal measurement. One manufacturer’s XXL can be considerably smaller than another’s, and for a particularly large Mastiff or another giant breed, even the largest standard size may simply not provide enough room.
An extra large dog collar for a Mastiff also needs to fit properly rather than just being long enough to close. Neck circumference, collar width, padding and the position of the buckle all influence how comfortable the finished collar will be. A collar that technically fits but leaves almost no adjustment is not necessarily the right size.
This is why every Lazypony collar can be made according to your dog’s individual measurements at no additional cost. If the dog needs something larger than our standard XXL size, we simply make a larger collar. There is no reason why the biggest dog should have to settle for a collar that only “almost” fits.
Different Collars for Large and Powerful Dogs
Large dogs do not all have the same proportions, so there is no single collar design that works best for every breed. Our collection of classic leather dog collars includes simpler designs for owners who want a traditional everyday collar, but there are also wider and more substantial models for dogs with powerful necks.
The Aragon leather dog collar is designed specifically with large, powerful and active dogs in mind. It combines full-grain leather, soft padding and strong brass or stainless-steel hardware with a wide construction that helps distribute pressure over a larger area of the neck.
Another option is the Wide Leather Collar Bull, a 5 cm wide padded model particularly well suited to muscular dogs with broad necks and shoulders. Its proportions work especially well for breeds such as Cane Corsos, Rottweilers, Dobermans, American Bullies and other strong dogs.
These are only two examples. Lazypony offers many other collar designs that can be made for large and giant dogs, from understated classic collars to wide decorative models. Because the collars are made to order, you can also choose leather, padding and stitching colours as well as brass or stainless-steel hardware.
An Extra Large Dog Collar Should Be Built Like One
Making an extra large dog collar is not simply a matter of adding a few centimetres to a standard collar. The materials and construction need to be appropriate for the size and strength of the dog that will actually wear it.
For large and giant breeds, good full-grain leather, strong stitching, top-quality hardware and correct sizing all matter. A collar should be comfortable for regular use and strong enough even for the biggest and strongest dog.
And size should never be the compromise. Whether your dog fits a standard Large or XXL size or needs something considerably bigger, a collar made to the dog’s actual measurements is the best and the most healthy solution. With custom sizing available at no extra charge, even the largest dogs can have a collar made specifically for them. Lazypony leathercraft workshop.
