Braided Leather Dog Collars: Comfort, Style and Durability
A braided collar for dogs are very traditional form of leather collars. But when we talk about braided leather collars, there are actually two quite different types: collars where braided leather forms the collar itself, and leather collars decorated with hand-braided leather details. Both can be excellent choices. The important difference is how they are constructed and what you expect from the collar in everyday use.
Fully Braided Leather Dog Collars
In a fully braided leather dog collar, the plaited leather forms the main structure of the collar not a simply being a decorative element. This type of construction has several practical advantages. Braiding creates a naturally flexible collar that adapts easily to the shape of the dog’s neck but also strong enough for even the most enthusiastic dog.
A plaited leather dog collar is also relatively lightweight and breathable. The open structure allows air to circulate and water to pass through easily, making this style particularly practical for active dogs and warm weather.
The Lazypony Leather Braided Dog Collar with Lead is made from braided full-grain leather, with the braid itself forming the structure of the collar. It can be ordered separately or together with a matching braided leather lead. Each piece is handmade in our workshop in Spain and can be ordered in different leather colours and with brass or stainless-steel hardware.
Leather Collars with Hand-Braided Decoration
The second option is quite different. Instead of constructing the entire collar from braided leather, this leather collar is decorated with an hand-braided leather design. This gives the collar the comfort and structure of a padded model and adding texture and an unique look.
Our Lorca Braided Leather Dog Collar is an example of this approach. It is made from full-grain leather with a soft padded lining that creates a comfortable contact surface and helps distribute pressure around the neck. The decorative leather braid is woven by hand using traditional Spanish leathercraft techniques, and the colours of the main leather, braid, padding and stitching can all be combined individually. This type of collar is a good choice if you like the appearance of traditional leather braiding but prefer a padded collar.
Why Quality Matters in a Braided Collar
The best braided collar for dogs is not simply the one with the most complicated braid. Leather quality and construction are especially important because the collar your dog wears every day directly affects her health and safety.
High-quality full-grain leather gradually becomes softer and more supple with use. A well-made leather collar adapts increasingly well to the shape of the dog’s neck and develops its own character over time. Both Lazypony braided designs are handmade from full-grain leather and are intended for regular everyday use. With appropriate care, either construction can provide many years of use.
A beautiful collar is only a good collar if it fits the dog correctly. Dogs vary enormously in neck circumference, shape, coat thickness and proportions, so standard sizes cannot provide an ideal fit for every dog.
Correct sizing affects comfort and safety. A collar should provide enough room for normal breathing and movement without being so loose that it moves excessively or allows the dog to slip out. This is why custom sizing is much more than many people think. Relatively few manufacturers can make an individual collar according to a dog’s actual measurements. At Lazypony leathercraft workshop, we not only offer this option, but make custom sizes at no additional cost for all out dog collar designs.
Whether you choose a lightweight plaited leather dog collar or a padded collar with elegant hand-braided decoration, you should not have to choose between design, durability and correct fit. Good leatherwork can provide all three. Lazypony leathercraft workshop
